Out of the Woods is a book to help people understand and overcome depression and anxiety. It is the author's own story told entirely through 700 beautifully hand drawn watercolor illustrations. It is an immensely practical guide for sufferers, their loved ones, and professionals working in the area too. The book's graphic memoir format blends a compelling personal story with the latest medical research - ideal for people who are in the depths of depression and struggling to read and take on board information. The book doesn't pretend there is a quick way out of these illnesses and instead encourages people to make small steps to slowly build their own lasting recoveries. Review in NZ Herald

'A great book that will bring understanding and hope to anyone who reads it.' – Professor Mark Williams, University of Oxford

'This is as clear, accurate and sympathetic a description of major depression and how to emerge from it as I have ever seen. I strongly recommend that anyone suffering from depressive illness should read this book first.' – Dr Tim Cantopher, Author of Depressive Illness – The Curse of the Strong

' A brave, important book.' – Professor Robert Sapolsky, Stanford University

Brent Williams was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1958. He built his career in community law, creating services and resources to help vulnerable people – particularly children, young people, and victims of family violence. In his resource work Brent used comics, re-enactments, and documentaries to tell stories of people asserting their legal rights. However, in his late forties he found he could no longer do this work. It was like he had hit an insurmountable wall. That wall was depression and anxiety.  Denial, shame, and a misguided belief he had to fight these illnesses on his own made Brent's situation worse. Not until he really acknowledged that he was ill and accepted help could his recovery begin.  Out of the Woods is an honest account of what Brent experienced and learned in his journey out of depression and anxiety.
