For as much as the reader gets to learn about the online dating business, for example, that chapter ends on a despondent note: “It brought us people, but it did not tell us what to do with them”.  

Many of the essays in “Future Sex” have been published previously, and they struggle to come together in a seamless narrative arc. Still, Witt should be applauded for avoiding the trap of self-absorption and for expanding our knowledge of sexual culture. She has in her own way reinvented the sex memoir.”

This is a new kind of memoir. Various essays exploring the future of sex, capitalism, pleasure, tech and connection. It is both hopeful and melancholic. Written in a pre-Trump America, Future Sex was first published in 2015, and it shows. The hope for the future is one of exploration and freedom. Beautifully written as Witt goes further and further into various aspects of sex until ending on a final chapter about the festival Burning Man (don’t be put off!) where, at the close of the book, the chapters reflect the various layers and circles that Burning Man is set up like. 

Overall a super interesting read! I’ve leant my copy out to so many friends I just keep buying more.  (Claire Book Grocer)

Emily Witt is a journalist, an essayist, and a critic. Her work has been published in n+1, GQ, New York magazine, The New York Observer, and the London Review of Books and anthologized in Best American Travel Writing. She has degrees from Brown University, the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and Cambridge, and she was a Fulbright scholar in Mozambique. She grew up in Minneapolis and now lives in Brooklyn, New York.
